TRAUMA
Trauma comes in many forms
Clients often tell me that they haven’t experienced trauma.
People usually associate trauma with injuries sustained from active military combat, sexual assault, or a terrible auto accident.
While these are obviously traumatic events, there are many other common ways that people experience trauma.
Everyone experiences trauma
Normal life events can take a toll on a person that may start to affect how they relate to themselves and others, including:
- Attachment trauma – the experience of feeling rejected or neglected by a primary caregiver
- Job loss
- Failed relationships
- Death of someone significant
- Chronic health problems or hospitalizations
- For LGBTQ+, the coming out experience (unfortunately!)
Working through old wounds can lead to healing and recovery
Some people have a difficult time recovering from trauma. Two people may experience a similar event and while one person recovers relatively unscathed, another can be plagued by the experience, unable to move on.
The nervous system can hold on to trauma in the body. If the experience isn’t processed, then it’s common to feel activated or “triggered” in a way that results in a highly emotional response that seems out of proportion to a given situation.
People with unprocessed trauma often experience anxiety, depression, and feeling like their emotions are out of control. It can negatively affect relationships through codependency, an inability to commit, or consistently ending up in toxic relationships.
